SUMMARY:Life Music - A Workshop with Chris North
DESCRIPTION:This unique\, well-established method was developed over many years by composer\, musician and writer Dr Rod Paton.\n\n\n‘LIFEMUSIC’ with Chris. North. \n‘Lifemusic’ puts the ‘hum’ back into human & connects us to time \nThe ‘Lifemusic’ method provides a safe\, participatory\, imaginative\, accessible and inclusive space for creating music which promotes our well-being. I supply the instruments but participants can also bring their own and any instrument is welcome. \nThis unique\, well-established method developed over many years was inspired by composer\, musician and writer Dr Rod Paton previously a Music Lecturer at Chichester University. It’s accessible to everyone whatever their age\, level of music training or none. \n“Everyone is musical\, there are no wrong notes and every sound has a meaning – making music is a question of trust.” \nWHAT HAPPENS IN ‘THAT SPACE’ ? \nI’ve around 60 various musical instruments which participants can choose from and use free expression\, improvisation\, listening and imagination to paint ‘sound pictures’. \nThere is satisfaction and depth in the creative process of ‘Lifemusic’ and a valuable and interesting experience to weave music\, poetry\, art and prose into a ‘sound landscape’ ! \nI’m passionate about ‘Lifemusic’ and its principles which apply to other forms of expressive art too. \n“Lifemusic is about the sound of music and people making connections” \nCert. Ed.; Associate Drama Board; Equity Member; Registered ‘Lifemusic’ Practitioner. Rod Paton’s book is: ‘Lifemusic Connecting People to Time’ published by Archive Publishing in 2012

SUMMARY:Folk\, Blues and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:An evening of Music and Words on the theme of Folk\, Blues and Beyond.\n\n\nOn February 16th 2024\, Words Out Loud will present an evening of Music and Words on the theme of Folk\, Blues and Beyond.\n \nWe are excited to have music from two wonderful local singer/songwriters\, Alex Roberts and Ben Jones\, both of whom play music rooted in Folk and Blues and the title of the evening comes from a 1965 Album by the legendary singer and guitarist Davy Graham. \nThe evening will also feature spoken word readings on the theme. \nThis piece from Alex Roberts conveys the mood\, vibe and feel of our theme for this night. \n \nI woke up this morning \nIn mind of a pledge made last night \nTo speak of the blues \nTo shed some light \n \n‘A musical style of early 20th Century African-America culture…’ \nA crossroads of work songs and spiritual songs \nSlavery and servitude shuffling behind 12 bars \n \nBut beyond this \nThe Blues is a universally human expression \nOf melancholy and oppression \nOf righteousness and defiance \nOf non-coercion and self-sovereignty \nOf spiritual fortitude \n \nTranscending race or creed \nNot merely a musical form \nBut a soulful language of inner truth \n \n\n\n\nAlex Roberts \n\nTo say that Alex has many strings to his bow would be a metaphor forgiven for the fact that it helps to conjure his presence as a musical magician. Almost totemic\, whether it’s finger-style acoustic guitar\, lap-steel\, or bouzouki\, Alex plays with a mastery borne of years of graft\, craft\, and of a man who seems to straddle boundaries of time. \n \nHis lyrics offer a fusion of cultural pertinence\, generated by an acute appreciation for our earth and ancestry\, and a raw gift for storytelling. His musical oeuvre is enriched by his travels and immersive living experiences\, the result is an oasis of mini ‘odysseys’ in which each song feels like it has been specially harvested for our appreciation. \n \nAlex has been actively engaged in a number of progressive musical and initiatives\, from Billy Bragg’s ‘Jail Guitar Doors’ – supporting rehabilitation with music in young offenders institutes\, to music therapy with disabled people. He is also a founding member of the Far Flung Collective . Alex’s music has been featured on film and television\, he also composes music for film. Most recently he collaborated with Double-Bassist\, Graeme Ross on a new album: ‘Meridians & Superpowers’. Released in February 2023. \n \nWith titles bestowed upon him such as ‘the Bard of Dorset’ and ‘Hollowneck Troubadour’ (after his award winning use of the lap-steel guitar)\, Alex continues to respond to his calling as a troubadour. \n \n\n\n\nBen Jones \n \nBen Jones is a folk/indie singer-songwriter who finds inspiration in the fusion of traditional and contemporary folk music. His heartfelt lyrics and melodies reflect a deep love for storytelling. \n \n“Fast becoming a very popular performer on the south coast” – PIP Productions. \n \nBen has played venues such as Wickham Festival\, Portsmouth Bandstand\, and performs regularly at venues spanning Brighton\, Chichester and Portsmouth. \n \nAfter the release of his independently produced album titled\, ‘You Know Me’\, Ben is now working towards a second self-produced album scheduled to be released next year.
