Words of Art – An Ekphrastic Writing Workshop

We’ve teamed up with Pallant House Gallery to offer you an Ekphrastic Writing Workshop using artworks displayed in the gallery as inspiration for writing your own poetry and prose.

Ekphrastic writing uses art as the subject matter and inspiration for creative writing.

Are you an art lover who would like to try your hand at expressing the impact art has on you through the written word? Or perhaps you are a writer or aspiring writer looking for ways to find inspiration. How do you feel when you look at a piece of art? What thoughts arise within you? What memories or sensations? What is the artist trying to say to you and what might you say in return? Who might you say it to?

The workshop is run by us, Words Out Loud, a Charitable Trust that aims to foster the enjoyment and benefits of the spoken word in Chichester through connections with like minded projects and initiatives in other parts of the UK and around the world.

Workshop Leaders:

Deni Jones – Deni has many years experience as a Lecturer and practitioner in English and Performing Arts to Further and Higher Education students. She has worked as an actor and director in the Theatre and is a teacher of Yoga and The Alexander Technique.

Mike Jenkins – Mike has worked as an actor and a Performing Arts Workshop Leader, has written poetry and plays and has worked in FE as a Drama Lecturer and in the business sector as Skills Trainer.

Also in attendance will be visiting artist, Valerie Scally. Valerie is Irish born, coming from a creative background and moved to London in her early 20s. She has been a practicing artist for over 20 years, is a member of the Haslemere Society, and is largely self-taught having had tuition with two local artists. Valerie works in acrylic and creates a diverse range of paintings including portrait. She has had varied commissions.
